The Blue Dot Movement Needs You!

The David Suzuki Foundation\’s Blue Dot Movement supports the right to a healthy environment for all Canadians.

alive\’s senior editor, Ellen Niemer, joined the David Suzuki Foundation\’s Blue Dot Movement and is working to create grassroots environmental change in Richmond, BC.

At alive, we’ve been writing about the importance of healthy food and environmental issues for almost 40 years. During that time, much has changed in the world, including ongoing climate change, a hole in the ozone, soil depletion, destruction of rainforests, pollution of water, melting of Arctic ice, garbage patches in the ocean, and the decline of honeybees and songbirds, to name a few serious environmental issues.

Right to a healthy environment

As Canadians, we value our natural forests and wilderness areas, our abundance of fresh water, and our breathable air. Being so fortunate environmentally, surely we must have the right to a healthy environment.

Think again

In 110 countries around the world, the right to a healthy environment is enshrined in their respective constitutions—but that number doesn’t include Canada.

Blue Dot Richmond

This summer I joined the David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot Movement. I was one of the first eight volunteers trained in Richmond, BC. We come from a diverse background, but the one thing we share in common is our love for the environment, and our desire to protect the people and places we love.

Together, we’re working to spread the word in Richmond that all Canadians should have the right to

  • fresh air
  • clean water
  • healthy food

Blue Dot Tour

To promote the right to a healthy environment, David Suzuki will be touring across Canada in 2014 , beginning September 24 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and ending in Vancouver, BC, on November 9.
